Painting Planets Series: Mercury
This small but mighty planet is the innermost member of our Solar System. Although its orbit around the Sun only takes 88 Earth days, one rotation is 59 days. Mercury’s color to the human eye is grey, however I was inspired to paint this planet based on NASA’s MESSENGER photos which enhanced the planet’s chemical and mineralogical differences. Mercury is comprised of 70% metallic and 30% silicate material with virtually no atmosphere.
In Astrology, Mercury is the messenger of information, ruling our communication and way of thinking. This planet enters retrograde a few times each year, appearing to move backwards in the night sky. However, this is just an illusion based on our earthly perspective. This phenomenon catches a bad rap for its influence in creating mixups and delays, but Mercury in retrograde is a beautiful opportunity to slow down and take space for introspection.

Painting Planets Series: Venus
Named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Venus is our 2nd planet from the sun and brightest natural object in the sky, besides the moon. With an atmosphere of 97% carbon dioxide, this planet is the hottest in the solar system with an average surface temperature of roughly 900 F or 465 C. Curiously, one day on Venus (243 Earth days) is longer than its year (225 Earth days). Many scientists believe this planet contained a large quantity of water billions of years ago. However, a runaway greenhouse effect boiled the water off of its surface.
Venus is the ruler of Libra and Taurus in Astrology. This planet is all about pleasure, governing our senses and inner desires. Venus represents love, beauty, relationships, money, art and fashion.

Painting Planets Series: Mars
Mars, named after the Roman god of war, is our neighbor being the 4th planet from the sun and second smallest in our solar system (not including poor Pluto). The Red Planet gets its color from iron oxide, which is the same compound in rust and our blood. You can even see its reddish hue on a clear night sky. Although Mars has a low atmospheric density, it consists primarily of carbon dioxide with trace amounts of oxygen, water, nitrogen and argon. The seasons on this planet are very similar to Earth, but twice as long due to the greater distance from the sun. However, its solar day is almost identical to ours at 24 hours and 39 minutes. Another similarity Mars has with us is its polar ice caps made out of H20 ice and frozen carbon dioxide. Lastly, this planet holds the record for the largest volcano and highest mountain in the solar system: Olympus Mons. Its height is two and a half times that of Mount Everest at a whopping 72,000 feet.
In Astrology, Mars rules Aries and governs aggression, action and sex. The Red Planet represents our basic body’s desires and first instincts; giving us the energy to create momentum in our lives.

Painting Planets Series: Jupiter
This gaseous giant comprised of roughly 3/4 hydrogen and 1/4 helium is the largest planet in our solar system. With a mass 2.5 more than all the other planets combined, it rotates faster than any other. Jupiter takes around 12 Earth years to orbit once around the sun. ‘The Great Red Spot’, which looks like a third nipple on my body, is the largest storm in the our system, lasting over 300 years.
In Astrology, optimistic Jupiter governs law, expansion via intellect or spirituality, good fortune, risk taking and higher learning.

Painting Planets Series: Uranus
Uranus is our 7th planet from the sun and coldest sphere in our solar system with a minimum temperature of -371 F/-224 C. This ice giant is 14.5 times the size of Earth with an atmosphere of primarily molecular hydrogen and helium. An interesting fact about Uranus is that its axis of rotation is tilted sideways, giving it the most unique seasonal changes of 42 years of continuous sunlight and darkness at its poles. Uranus comes in at second to Saturn with 13 visible rings.
In Astrology, Uranus is a planet of cosmic surprises and breakthroughs. It governs progressiveness, originality and rebelliousness. Its reactiveness cultivates radical truths.

Painting Planets Series: Neptune
Named after the Roman god of the sea, Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun with a mass 17 times that of Earth. Its atmosphere contains helium, hydrogen and trace amounts of methane. Although the amount is small, methane absorbs red light which is the reason for the planet’s deep blue color.
This mystical ice giant is the ruler of inspiration, spirituality, dreams, intuition and illusion in Astrology.

Painting Planets Series: Pluto
Pluto, our farthest planet from the sun, is also our smallest, being 1/6 the mass of our moon and only half as wide as the United States. It’s rotation period is 6.4 Earth days with a whopping 248 year orbit around the sun. Pluto has 5 moons, one of them being Charon, which is half the size of the planet itself. In 2006 Pluto was reclassified as a “dwarf planet”, but I still felt the need to recognize this underdog of our solar system.
Pluto is the great revealer in Astrology representing the underworld, subconscious forces, and renewal/rebirth. Its influence in creative destruction is a kind of wrecking ball; releasing buried power or truths.
